For over two decades, Dr. Narinder S. Grewal, MD has provided patients with cutting-edge pain management treatments. At his Advanced Pain Management and Neurology clinic in Valencia, California, he has helped patients overcome debilitating chronic pain, allowing them to live healthier, happier, more productive lives. Dr. Grewal is board-certified in anesthesiology and in pain medicine, and is considered a leader in the field of interventional pain therapy. Here is a look at how his leadership has influenced his practice and his life of caring for others.
What Lead You to Practice Medicine? I gained an appreciation for the medical science at an early age. The field blended my interest in science as well as in helping others, and I got the opportunity to attend the Patiala Government Medical College in my native country of India. I knew that being a medical professional would be incredibly rewarding, and since I earned my doctorate in 1978, I have had the opportunity to positively influence countless lives. Being able to help patients overcome chronic pain conditions has been the pinnacle of my professional career. What Inspired You to Focus on Pain Management? Too often, medical practitioners are unwilling or unable to understand the causes of pain, particularly in the neck, spine, and lower back. Prescription medications are only a small part of the overall therapeutic picture, and pain management specialists like myself are able to use medicines to support many other non-invasive treatment options. As a young man working my way through medical school, I encountered many people who were struggling with chronic pain conditions – people who had not found the medical help they needed to improve. I believed the best way to help them was to become immersed in pain management practices, leading me to become certified in the field as well as undergoing extensive training and certification as an anesthesiologist. What is Your Greatest Achievement in the Field? I have enjoyed many triumphs and achievements in the medical profession, but perhaps my greatest achievement is the establishment of the Advanced Pain Management and Neurology Clinic in California. We now operate several clinic locations, serving patients throughout Southern California. I have been able to assemble a highly-capable team of medical professionals and support staff, each dedicated to helping patients live pain-free lives. How Do You Keep Up with the Latest Styles and Methods of Pain Management? Advances in pain management come at a rapid pace, and it is imperative that medical professionals gain an understanding of emerging therapies in order to better serve their patients. I engage in continuing education programs each year, including specialized training and by attending conferences with my peers in the pain management field. By taking the time to learn about new treatment options, I can increase my knowledge as well as provide cutting-edge care for the thousands of patients who rely on our clinical practice. Being a leader in any field requires sacrifice, dedication, and the ability to adapt to changes. I believe in the participative style of leadership, bringing together my team of care providers to learn as one cohesive unit. Together, we are capable of overcoming any challenge, and our patients benefit as a result. What Makes Your Clinical Practice Different? The pain management field has received negative attention over the past decade due to over-prescription of powerful narcotic painkillers. Many practices in the field have been labeled “pill mills”, harming the efforts of those of us who wish to provide our patients with comprehensive care solutions. In order to maintain the status and value of this field of medicine, we approach patient interactions differently than other pain management clinics. Each encounter begins with a detailed assessment of the patient’s lifestyle, pain factors, and underlying causes leading to the pain. By employing advanced diagnostics, we are able to pinpoint the pain, then develop solutions to overcome the discomfort that robs our patients of their ability to function. We take a whole-body approach, addressing all of the factors that may cause pain. By doing so, our patients have positive outcomes, letting them regain lost mobility and allowing them to enjoy more active lifestyles. We also believe in strong patient advocacy, involving each patient in his or her own unique care plan. By doing so, we are empowering our patients to take charge of their conditions and their treatments. We have found that this approach is highly beneficial. As a leader, I am responsible to those who look to me for guidance. My clinic’s patients value the personalized, tailored approach to their care plans, and improved patient outcomes are a major part of why our clinic stands out in this field of medicine.
